It’s important to take care of your body and prevent illness, no matter your age. But if you’re 65 or older, something as simple as the common cold can progress and lead to further health complications. Therefore, in celebration of International day for Older Persons, we thought we’d share some tips on the steps older persons can take to remain healthy throughout the year.

  1. Get active

Physical activity helps make the immune system stronger, allowing it to fight inflammation and infections. The activity you do does not have to be high intensity or strenuous. Something as simple as going for a walk would be just as effective!

  1. Take supplements as advised

Certain supplements help support a healthy immune system. Before taking a supplement, run it by your doctor first to make sure it is the right one for you.

  1. Eat a healthy diet

Eating a balanced diet helps boost your immune system. Make sure to eat foods rich in vitamins, minerals and proteins, and avoid those that are high fat, sugar and salt.

  1. Wash your hands frequently

This is something we have heard constantly for these last 2 years – and with reason. If you touch a virus-covered surface, and then touch your face, it is most likely that you will become infected. Protect yourself by frequently washing your hands with soap or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  1. Learn how to manage your stress

Stress can weaken your immune system, therefore it is important to find ways to reduce your stress. Try activities such as exercise, meditation or deep breathing to help manage your stress.

  1. Get plenty of rest

It is important to get an adequate amount of sleep in order to keep your immune system strong. Sleep is also how our body repairs itself, and has been shown to improve our memory and concentration.

  1. Get Vaccinated!

Take steps to prevent infection and get your annual flu and Covid vaccinations. Talk to your doctor for information regarding the vaccines.

  1. Schedule your check ups

Having an annual check up with your doctor can allow them to pick up an illness or condition early, thus allowing them to treat it before any complications occur.
