Back to school, back to reality. Yay! For both the kids and the parents.

Due to the ever so popular Netflix, and the variety of gaming devices out there, most of our kids spend a lot of time sitting around these holidays. Research has shown that inactive children become inactive adults, which can place young people at risk of developing life-threatening conditions. Yikes!

So, now that school is back, it is important to encourage your children to join a sport, get moving and do some exercises.

Here are some benefits that exercise has for children:

  • Provides an opportunity to socialise
  • Increases concentration
  • Improves academic scores
  • Builds strong bones, muscles and heart
  • Encourages healthy growth and development
  • Boosts self-esteem
  • Lowers stress
  • Allows a better night’s sleep

Find physical activities that your kids enjoy in order to make it stick! Figure out if your child prefers team sports, individual sports, land or water sports – and encourage whatever you think would be the best fit.

Some important points to remember

  • Ensure your child is wearing the correct equipment and protective gear for their sport.
  • If your child has any medical conditions, make sure to clear the physical activity with the doctor first.
  • Should you feel like your child needs extra guidance with exercise, contact your biokineticist and physiotherapist to help create an individualized exercise program.
  • If your child gets injured, remember to contact your physiotherapist to ensure complete and speedy healing of the injury.

Oh, and while you’re encouraging your child to do some exercise, why not make it a healthy family activity and join them!
